The Story of Hurley Ceol

Nestled within the heart of Dublin's vibrant cultural tapestry is a rich tradition of folk music that weaves through the cobbled streets and lively pubs, creating a harmonious connection between past and present. Dublin's folk music scene, deeply rooted in Irish heritage, is a captivating blend of storytelling, spirited melodies, and soul-stirring performances. From the intimate sessions in cozy pubs to the larger stages that echo with the sounds of fiddles, bodhráns, and heartfelt vocals, the city resonates with the warmth and authenticity of its folk music.

Folk music has always been the annuls of the working man, passing the shared experiences and melodies through generations. In 2020 we set out to create a fusion instrument that celebrated these traditions and paid homage to another of Dublins cultural cornerstone - the ancient Gaelic game of hurling.

From humble beginnings of building 3 string electric instruments on old hurling sticks we soon rented a small workshop near Croke Park and began building acoustic instruments tailored for the Dublin folk sessions.

In 2022 we started working with Farrel Hurls (a premium hurley manufacturers), an exciting upgrade from preloved sticks, we were now able to have hurls made to measure, in Dublin, from Irish grown ash.

By 2023 we were finally able to perfect our 36” six-string version and 32” four-string versions and began selling to a local market.

To celebrate the journey and the commend both pursuits we are paying homage to we dubbed these instruments Hurley Ceols; and each bears the ogham for Ceol - the Gaelic word for music. Ceol, the Gaelic word for music, holds a profound significance in Irish culture, acting as a soulful thread that weaves through the tapestry of the nation's identity. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, Irish music captures the essence of the people, their struggles, joys, and resilient spirit. From the lilting melodies of traditional folk tunes to the lively jigs and reels that set hearts dancing, ceol is a living expression of Ireland's rich heritage.
